Collaboration - Embroidery Event (China)

It was my great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with local artist/designer Sharlene Leong from @wordyourstory in an embroidery event in Chongqing, China over the past week. We had a hectic week prior to the event, creating embroidery pieces for the show (this explains the lack of update). Thankful for the memorable experience and enjoyable trip!

OSCAS & Quote Of The Week

I was very honoured to have the opportunity to donate some of my cards to Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter – OSCAS , my second beneficiary of the year. I met up with Clara and Mary (co-founder of OSCAS) at Scape last Sunday where they held their 'Oldies Only' Senior Pet Adoption Drive event. This event is actually organised by Old Is Gold, a final year project of a group of undergraduate students from NTU. Do checkout their Facebook page Old Is Gold to show them some support for this amazing initiative!

Updates And Result For Giveaway

A few things to update today.

Over the weekend, we had two events going at the same time. Both of these shelters, Gentle Paws and Causes For Animals Singapore (CAS) are one of our beneficiaries. Thank you for those who were there to show them your support. If you know of other animal shelters who might benefit from our merchandise donation, do drop me a message and I'll be in touch. :)

Our DOGs campaign perks...

The parcels were finally packed and delivered to our beloved funders! Yay~ You could be receiving them this week if you reside in Singapore. In fact, some of them told me they'd received it. International shipping usually takes about 2 weeks but since it's the festive period, it could be longer. I hope you'll like your items! :)

Now, the result for our giveaway! Woohooo~~

It was nap time and my boy was reluctant to help, so I had to do the pick myself. Congratulations to Christina Siew, the lucky winner of our giveaway! I'll get in touch with you soon.

Thanks to everyone who took part. I hope you had fun like I did. I'm hoping to do a giveaway every month. Do like (and 'follow') our Facebook page or subscribe to our mailing list to ensure you don't miss our next giveaway.

Have a great week ahead!~

FINALLY, here comes our 5th DOGs illustration! I'm really sorry for the delay. It took me quite some time to come out with the desired 'look' for this piece. I hope you like it!

Thank you to all my new funders and your sharing on social media about this campaign! I can't tell you just how much I appreciate the constant encouragement and support I'm getting right from the start of this campaign - people I know and people I've not even met before. Thank you for putting your trust in my works and for your love for the dogs.

I'd spent my Sunday at a local dog shelter Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD)'s flag day event. Seeing soooo many adorable dogs make me wish I can bring them all home! Unfortunately I'm not able to do that. But what I CAN do is help in small little ways such as promoting the welfare of animals through my drawings and donating a portion of my earnings to aid them in running the shelter. I hope I'll be able to do more as time goes by.

We're down to 12 days before the end of our campaign. Have you already made your contribution? You can donate as little as a dollar or more to receive one of our Perks. Half of the sale proceeds from this campaign will go to a local dog shelter. Every dollar counts!

Find out how you can get one of our adorable DOGs illustrations while supporting a good cause here, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/dogs-postcard

Please continue to help us spread the message too! Thank you~

Thank Youuu!

A BIG thank you to everyone who came down to support us at MAAD last Friday! We actually made the most number of sales that day. Of course this wouldn't have been possible without your love and support. It was really heartwarming to see familiar faces among the customers.

Special thanks to my bunch of crazy and awesome friends - Claire, Berri, Alivia, Adric, Ezra, Dennis and Don who popped by just to say hello, bought me yummy food (because they said I'm too skinny) or offered their help! I'm really blessed. ^^

Basic Illustration Class - Lesson 3

Hello guys! Thankfully I was able to retrieve the files I lost on Saturday! So here's what I did for my illustration class few weeks back.

Before the lesson starts, we always do a recap on our previous lesson:

Perspective

1 point and 2 point perspective

Moving on, we looked up for some references and came up with our 3 point perspective desert illustration.

Ta-dah!! Here's my incomplete version with funny looking little stick men walking across the desert. They're probably searching for the legendary giant! See the huge footprints? :p

Lastly, I'd like to end my post with a lovely encounter I've had at the post office yesterday.

I was at the counter packing a customer's order when this lady who was also there to send out some parcels came up to me. She pointed at the Christmas postcards I was holding in my hands and asked if I drew them. I told her I did and she exclaimed 'Wow, they're beautiful. You're really great!'. As we were the last two customers to leave the place, we chatted abit outside the post office.

Apparently, she'd just sent her daughter to an art school and she couldn't help but feel concerned about her career path after she graduates. I shared with her what I do as an illustrator/designer besides freelancing; selling my works at flea markets, doing consignments and having my artworks licensed by art licensing companies. I told her that I'm very happy because I'm doing something I love. She seemed impressed. Finally she smiled at me and said, 'You are very brave. All the best to you.'

Yes, it may not be any easy path but it's definitely one of the greatest choices I've made. :)

I'm Blessed ^^

Hello! So sorry for the delay of this post.

First of all, I would like to do a BIG shout out to everyone, especially to my friends (over 30 of them!) who came by our booth last Friday.

Thank you so much guys!! I really appreciate your presence and it certainly means alot to have your support. I so regret not taking a photo with each of you. :(

Pardon the image quality, there wasn't enough light in the room.

I felt so loved that day...

I've had sweet friends to help me delivered those merchandise/props to the venue, setting up the booth, bought me food/drinks, and lovely customer who came down specially to pass me a gift she made.

I've had my awesome boyfriend to help out at the booth when I needed to catch up with friends I hadn't seen in years. AND there was one friend who dropped by with a big BIG surprise for me. I need to tell you what this absolutely generous and awesome friend of mine had bought me.........

It was a pair of Melissa ANGEL heels! *Keyword here is ANGEL. Now you know my fetish.

Isn't this stunning?!!

This is in fact the most expensive pair of shoes I own! Ha. However, what made my little heart swelled with emotions apart from this bubble gum smelling shoes was the handwritten notecard that says,

''Congrats on taking this big step! I'm so proud of you. Just know you are one of the bravest people I know. I know this is just one of the many big things you will be doing with your dreams. To many more big steps, and now you can do that with pretty shoes. :p I love you! Take flight and follow your dreams'' - ❤ Eva.

You might be wondering; why would getting a booth at the flea market seems like such a big thing for me? No, my friend is not exaggerating. It may seem like a simple task for just anyone but certainly not for someone with social anxiety. The need to speak with so many strangers in one day is close to asking me to jump into a sea full of sharks. Of course I'm not saying my customers are sharks but you get my point.

I've always thought I have an exceptionally 'shy' personality, that's it. But now as I reflect on my past, I recall being misunderstood all the time. 'Arrogant', 'aloof' or 'anti-social' are just some of the labels people have used on me. Truth is, deep beneath that cool mask was a very fearful and insecure girl. I would get totally stressed up when I meet new people or get very nervous when strangers stop me on the street to ask for direction. In fact, I never knew there is a term call 'social anxiety' until recently when I came across this article, 'Anxiety No More' written by Paul David. As I read through his story, I felt he was totally writing about me! At one part, he said,

''I would also avoid eye contact and just wanted to escape. Because of this I started avoiding people and I was perceived as ignorant more than once. I don't blame people for this perception of me and as far as I was concerned that was far better than having to go and talk to others. I just found it so difficult to hold a conversation and I never felt part of it.''

As odd as it may sound to you, this is exactly what I'm going through. I felt such a huge relief to know I'm not alone. I guess my low self-esteem and already existing anxiety issue must have contributed to this. If you suspect anyone who could be suffering from social anxiety or other anxiety issues, it would really help to read up about what they're going through. Your support and encouragement would mean alot to them.

I may still be struggling from racing heart, shortness of breath and sleeping difficulty every single day or more symptoms every other day, but I'm really grateful to have some wonderful friends and a very supportive boyfriend on my journey. On my part, I promise to take baby steps at a time to overcome those fears. :)

Thank you again for reading.

❤ Xoxo, Rheea.

Join Us At MAAD (Market of Artists and Designers)!

Yes, it's happening AGAIN!

We're diving right into another flea market after an uninteresting one just a week ago (read all about it HERE). I'm very sure it's going to be much more promising and exciting this time round. Why? Because it's not simply any ordinary flea market, BUT a market  of ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS (MAAD)! You just love the name don't you?

''MAAD is a Market of Artists And Designers. An excuse to do something more exciting with your life. A space for exhibiting, performing, selling, shopping, chit-chatting, surprising and experimenting. MAAD is beyond the usual fashion-base, second-hand flea market. MAAD hawks only original, creative, and more often than not, handmade works by talented painters, jewellery makers, product designers, visual artists, wordsmiths and eco-friendly seamstresses.'' -www.maad.sg

If you like the sound of it already, come join us this Friday (just 3 more days!), 1st March at Red Dot Museum (Singapore). We'll be there from 5pm all the way till midnight! More information can be found on my Facebook page.

We'll be selling some of our lovely gift cards, prints, limited edition handmade bookmarks/ postcards/ notebooks, tumblers etc.

Look out for our booth with this little signage and say hello! :)

Okay, back to my postcards making...

(For more personal, behind-the-scene and production photos, join us on Instagram!)

See you this Friday!~

Flea Market Updateeee :/

As soon as photos of the flea market were posted on my Facebook page last Sunday, I received comments and text messages from friends asking why I did not inform them about the event. And I thought I'd flooded my Facebook page (blog and twitter) since a month ago?

Okay, so now I learned something.. NOT everyone checks their Facebook multiple times a day!! *Sheepish smile.

Well, I've made a mental note on that, to spam, no I mean 'inform' everyone about any upcoming event directly to their inboxes next time. If you'd also like to receive updates from us, like us on Facebook!

I hear you ask, 'So, how did the flea market went that day?'

One word - BOringgg!!!! And here comes my whining...

Rewind back to Sunday. When we arrived at Scape around 12 noon, we were momentarily horrified to discover 99% of the booths selling ONLY cheap second hand clothes! Our disappointment increased with each passing minute as we noticed 98% of the crowd were obviously there for second hand items. You can pretty much imagine our frustration with these people shoving and crowding around our neighbours' booths like we were totally invisible.

Finally after 5 hours of idling, we gave up and decided to call it a day. Those of you who came down for us later that day, I'm sorry you missed us. Special thanks to my friend, Alicia, who sacrificed her family day to join me that day. I would have been literally bored to tears without her company. AND, not forgetting my very sweet boyfriend who kept an eye on the booth for me while I sneaked away for loooong breaks. No choice, you can't make an ADD person sit around doing nothing for even 30 minutes. :p

Limited edition handmade (with love!) silkscreened postcards & bookmarks.~

Limited edition handmade (with even more love!) notebook set.~

My adorable business cards!~ :p

And the adorable me. XD

By the way, we made one sale that day. Yes, that was the ONLY sale we made in that 5 hours. But then again, ONE sale is still better than NO sale. Heh!~

Now thinking back, I actually find the whole thing so funny. lol.

I guess more importantly, it's not about how much money we made that day but rather what we can learn from this experience. Now I have a better idea on what to prepare and how to set up my own booth the next time round. I'm sure it's going to be much better!

Keep a lookout for our next flea market! Coming REAL soon. :)

❤ Xoxo, Rheea.

GONG XI FA CAI to everyone celebrating the Lunar New Year! ^^

I hope you've collected tons of 'ang pows' (red packets) and indulged on the endless supply of pineapple tarts.

(Pardon the image quality. This was my mom's best shot after her 10th attempt. lol).

On a different note, I received this email two weeks ago from a sweet lady, Eileen:

''Hi Rheea, was recently at Cat Socrates and bought a tumbler designed by you :) love it for the simplicity of the design!''

She went on to say that she would like to share more about me on her blog, www.ourpaperbacks.wordpress.com. Ourpaperbacks is a little personal space of Eileen, where she shares handicrafts that she made, local artists' works and stories of people who inspire her. I am so honored to be one of them.
